Check List
Here's a quick and dirty list of the things you need to do prior to an event:
- Install and update any games you'll be playing
- Make sure you have a virus scanner and perform a scan
- Turn off Internet Connection Sharing
It's always a good idea to update your Steam games the night before, and morning of the event (and whenever else you feel the urge). Steam updates always seem to coincide with the Perth LAN schedule, and it sucks having 400+ people download the update at once.
What to bring
Nothing is worse than arriving at a LAN, getting a seat and remembering you forgot that rare and exotic connector. Here's our list of lanning essentials:
- Your computer, and a single monitor
- Keyboard, mouse, etc.
- Power cables to hook it all up
- A 10 Meter network cable
- Headphones
- Friendly attitutde and pro gaming skills :)
On the day
Once you arrive, line up at the entrance and let one of our staff sign you in. You'll need to know the email address you signed up with, and your name (hopefully not too hard to remember!). When you're in, pick a free table and plug in your gear.
When you've had a chance to settle in, feel free to join one of our game servers or start your own with the people on your table. If you want to order food, find out about our game tournaments or any other info - open your web browser and visit our event intranet at event.walan.org.
If you need anything else and you can't find a friendly face around you, feel free to grab one of our staff who will be happy to help - we'll be the ones wearing spiffy WALAN shirts!
Frequent Questions

No. We are an all ages event, and as such do not allow the consumption of alcohol at our events. We also reserve the right to reject those under the effects of alcohol, who cause problems.
Can I bring my own game server?
Yes, however you will need to contact us to arrange it beforehand and pay for an extra seat.
Can I bring my own food and drink?
You sure can! It should be noted however, that we do not provide facilities for cooking food.
Can I bring extra food or drink to sell?
No. Food and drink sales help us cover the cost of our events - if you find that you are wanting for something we're not selling enough to start selling it, why not poke us and let us know so we can add it to our menu?
Can I bring a UPS or surge protector?
No. These devices cause problems with our event power distribution, and as such are strictly prohibited.
How long should my network cable be?
Ideally, your network cable should be around 10 meters. If you are unable to get a cable any longer, you may be limited as to how far along the table you can set up.

No. Attendees are required to bring headphones for listening to their computer.
What can't I bring to the LAN?

What are those barcodes?
Upon entry to our events, you will be given barcode stickers to attach to your equipment. Equipment must be checked out by you, before we will allow it to leave the venue.
I'm worried about the safety of my possessions, what can I do?
We provide equipment tagging to all our patrons. Equipment cannot leave the venue until it has been checked through our equipment tagging system. Apart from this, we can only suggest that you bring what you need, and make sure it's within your view all the time.
I have a suggestion for the event, who should I contact?
For all suggestions, please head to our contact page. We will attempt to get back to you within twenty four hours on business days, but please allow up to five working days during busy periods before re-submitting your suggestion.
Being a community run event, the suggestions we receive are very important to us and go a long way to help shaping the LAN. Many suggestions are incorporated into our events and it all contributes towards making WALAN more entertaining for you!
What does WALAN do with all its surplus?
We are a not for profit organisation. As such, we aim to charge people just enough such that we cover all our costs on any given event. Any surplus contributes towards future events
What is a "silly" comp?
What do you get when you cross sleep deprivation, a prize and a WALAN admin with nothing better to do for a few minutes? A Silly Comp!
Silly competitions are typically ways we get you to get out of your seat and embarrass yourself in front of everyone else in exchange for a prize. Previous silly comps include a treasure hunt, arguably Australia.s biggest ever game of music chairs, numerous singing competitions and the infamous badger competition.
